A lesson learned the hard way.

A lesson learned the hard way.

Postby fishki » Sat Jun 21, 2008 7:40 pm

Ok, today it "sucks to be me" heres a quik rundown, one of my home pc's i double as server, but not often. I needed to transfer data between two servers, so i opened up a port that should not have been exposed just to make the transfer faster. Exploited big time. With in 2 or 3 minutes I was infected faster than all my antivirus/spyware programs could catch and quarintine. 20 hours later im still digging hooks out of my reg. Now my desktop wont run, in my effort to dig out hooks I removed a .dll I needed, and I just cant replace the missing .dll, to repair my desktop i have to put the virus back in and merge it to some other files, then remove it once again leaving that 1 particular file in place. Since the original virus has long since been destroyed I now have to find a place to download this virus. So now I'm taking a break. Luckily I have other pc's and can work on mine via them.

So to all you out there, never ever let down your guard. Keep all anti virus up to date and run it regularly. Or you might just end up like me. All of this trying to save 30 minutes worth of upload time.

edit: drive is corrupt, hopefully I can slave it and salvage some data as it had server files, at least I got backups on another server, damn it. This site was on that drive.

People just have to go and make viruses so they can ruin someone's machine. So stupid.

yeah, if i could find them i kick there ass, a 5000 dollar home made server, luckily just a hundred dollar drive, i can save the drive no problem, my concern is saving the data.

That was one mean bug, first time one kicked my ass any way. All the twistedblister web files are on that drive tho so now im at another machine loading up ftp so i can get my backups off outside server. My company files are on there also.

As to what i was uploading. just server files from one to another, cleaning up another website and updating with new content.

was just a big cost to save upload time

ya suckage big time...i think i can thumb the drive and retrieve the data, it corrupted the system part of the hive luckily, so i can get my data, wipe the drive , reinstall os and be good to go....bastards anyway. I would not have cared so much if it didnt have my server files on there.

here is my Beef its not necessarilly hackers but kids wiht internet connections and the ability to copy and paste. thats all it takes to ruin OS's exposed on the net.

You have my sympathy. wow yeah my old machine could have functioned as a server but i used it for games. the first time i realized i had an issue was when i was not connected through a router / firewall and just strait to the cable modem. my antivirus lit up and started poping up notices of ping attacks.

I think hacking is ok for knowladge and learning but doing this just to cause grief makes no sense in the end it hurts the people doing it by degre becase everyone is connected in some distant sense.

wow that is a tragic tale. I am very sorry to hear that. I would lend you a hand for the beatings if I could :-)

well here is my shining thread of light for you. Your preperations and preventive messures are working 100% and keeping the virus's out. you have confirmation by the nature of the open port which proves that until you opened it no virus could penrtate. so what you are doing as countermessures are well thought out and effective.

I know its little consolation when sitting with an urgent / High priority server dead in your lap but its good to know your saftey practices and paln function well.
