Dogfighting tips

I copied my post over to announcements. I don't want these tips to get lost among threads. So I want these to be up in this thread to access at any time. Have fun with it guys.

Oh and I have some homework for you guys. First for those who want to be assigned pilots, I want you guys to really take advantage of the flight simulator that Warhawk provides. The flight simulator with all the probes shooting missiles at you really helps your dodging skills. Practice with that as much as you can. I use Pro Flight when I am in the air, I recommend Pro Flight, but if you feel you are better with Normal Flight then stick with that. For those who want to dodge missiles using Pro Flight, I recommend watching this video to learn:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX1gDnqJBGM

I also recommend reading this guide from the PSN Forums. It's a lot of info, but reading through it helped to make me a better pilot:

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playsta ... ing&page=1

Study this stuff guys. Remember, this practice is for those who want to be the clan's assigned pilots. You are being picked to be pilots, so please remember that lol. Myself and other experienced pilots are more than willing to share tips on how to become better pilots for those willing to learn. It's all to better the clan.

It takes practice TB. I can last longer against 2 or 3 Warhawks a lot longer than I used to. I will shake off most of their lock ons, the rest is just your own actions. Sometimes when a few warhawks are on me, I'll suddenly fly straight up using my boost to really confuse the heck out of them. I'll notice that below me they'll be circling around confused looking for me, that's when I'll then swoop down on them from above and make a kill. A good way to shake them or rattle them. Just keep practicing, it pays off :yeh:

Pocket's Stratagy and Tips for flying

1. First and foremost, know the map. Where every weapon and every health icon is and the fastest way to get to it.
2. There are no cheap tactics in warhawk, only people who are better than you and will kill you the same way every time if you let them. Which brings us to number 3.
3. Learn from your deaths. Dont be too quick to respawn if the same guy is killing you every time. Watch your death screen to see what your killer does to the next person they engage. How and from what direction they attack from. Do they use stealth and LG or homing and swarms. Watch their flight paths and which pickups they frequently get. Watch where they go to dodge missles, up or down.
4. Know when to wheel and deal and when to run and heal. As a rule for me, if I have lost health to the point where I could not survive a homing missle hit, I go get health.
5. Use the freaking terrain! Dont fly in open air if you can avoid it.
6. Dont fly in straight lines. Use erratic flight patterns and changes of direction to avoid locks and stay out of the crosshairs.
7. Dont panic because of charged lightning. If you paid attention to rule 4 you will be fine. Simply equip your chaff and be ready to use it as you are going for health. If you have stealth use it to prevent further missle locks.
8. Machine guns, homings, swarms, tows, lightning and airmines are the weapons that are designed to take out other aircraft. Use them all !!! I have come to realize that there is no honor code in warhawk, so just because you dont like using a certain weapon cough... airmines...cough dosent mean that you shouldnt.

Tactics

1. I prefer to start with a close range homing missle. Almost a guranteed hit if done right except against an elite pilot. Get your lock as you are coming toward your target, boost to close the gap and release at the last possible second. Then do a powerslide turn and lock 2-4 swarms on and try to release the same way. If they are running for health, release them early to set off their missle warning. This often causes them to start dodging and many times they will miss the health they were going for, giving you a second chance to finish the job you started.
2. The stealth+LG is considered to be cheap by many players. Please refer to rule 8 in the previous section. Get in close behind you enemy while you are cloaked. Select the LG to uncloak and hit that button as fast as you can as many times as you can. They wont know they are hit till the third of fourth zap finds its mark leaving them at half health. Finish with swarms or more careful and more accurate zaps if you have any left.
3. Airmines. Use them. These are pretty self explanatory, put them in key places around items you need or around weapons your opponent is favoring. Dont put them in the clouds if you can avoid it, you will just run into them later.

And always to fly under control. Conserve your boost for when you need it and dont rush head long into a mine field. If you see a enemy air mine.... stop and shoot it down! Or at least remember about it and come back to it later, dont let a teammate find it with their plane. Dont be overly agressive, you will either over shoot your target or end up with an airmine in your face.

Thats all I got for now. Hope it helps.

Wow! Great tips from the Pocket_Sand playbook! lol. Pocket is right, especially on tip #1. You seriously need to know the map. I can tell anyone exactly where every missile icon, TOW icon, and health icon is on every map. If you know the layout, you have an advantage against pilots who don't.

I also like Pocket's idea on knowing how your enemy fights. I know Pocket knows how I fly because he's the only pilot that follows me up high into the sky where I like to hide and strike from above. My strategy no longer works on him, so I now have to change things up lol

Honestly DW, this is why I have been getting the better of you recently when we go against each other. I come in close and release, then I just turn straight up and find you in the clouds. I think you still got me in close quarters combat though. I can never seem to locate you when we are in tight circles together and end up gettin peppered with swarms.

Tips for taking out stationary objects such as turrets and stopped tanks.

Method 1. For missle turrets, approach cautiously at first without boost. Lock on a homing missle but always be ready to switch to chaff if you see it fire. Release the homing as soon as you get the lock, then boost quickly infront of your missle and lock on 2-3 swarms and release. All of the missles should arrive almost simultaneously, thus not allowing them time to exit the turret. You actually can kill the turret with one homing and some well aimed machine guns but this is riskier because you have to hold your line longer and it allows you less time to chaff or dodge if they get a shot off. This method works well for flack guns but you must approach without them seeing you. The flack gun will kill you before you have a chance to lock on the swarms if it sees you coming.

Method 2. Just drop a cluster bomb on them! But be careful, if they hold their lock till the last minute you will never get the bomb off. I prefer to approach in stealth and switch to the c-bomb at the last second. Of course this sometimes ends up with me chaffing the turret I was trying to kill.

Method 3. Approach from behind the turret in stealth and hover. Equip the lightning and tap the LG and machine guns as fast as you can. You will be suprised how fast this will kill a turret.

For tanks. Hover slightly above them and just fire as fast as you can while moving in erratic circles or half circles. Swarms and Lightning work best in these situations due to their rapid fire rate. Dont forget about your machine guns, they help soften up that thak. Also do not trust your screen for the direction the tank cannon is pointing, this is a ping issue. Many times I have been shot down by a tank whose cannon was facing the wrong way. Also the cluster bomb is a great weapon against tanks as well.

And finally, the best and my personal favorite method, just use the big purple missle that makes your screen turn grey for a second. It goes boom!

Damn kill cam.

Air mines in clouds are awesome, allies fly into them sometimes though, but it nets alot of kills. Ground troops cant shoot them down ether (usually)
