OK. first the inital offering of yellow dog was downloadable for free. now you have to pay for the new version. kind of bums me out that no one is hosting an ISO of it to download.

next i corrupted the Linux OS sawp file some how when i did a PS3 GAMe sysgtem software update. can not fix with my itteration of yellow dog so now i have to swtich bakc during the reboot and catch it at the boot option secction and type the line in to get back to the GAme sys OS.

That said its roubust and came with Oppen ofice bundled so i did not have to go out and download it myself. the package manager is nice and easily selectable by GUI's nice desktop overall. I dont honestly use it much. but a nice option if you know someone hedging about spending the cash for a PC or a PS3

link to the install desktop and login splash

visually it did not make a lot of sense i just wanted to show the older Yellow linux loading on my PS3 not the best shots i have ever taken. What sucks is the first release they let you downlaod but to upgrade you have to buy the new release. Some programers need to get out there and recompile it and re-release it as thiers for free.

^This

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 was one of the first Linux distributions to run on Sony's PlayStation 3 platform. It is designed specifically for HDTV so users with SDTV will have to use the commands 'installtext' and 'ydl480i' to be able to install and run.

Yellow Dog Linux includes well-known GNU/Linux components such as GCC, as well as other free/open-source technologies such as Apache, PostgreSQL, Python, Webmin, and XFree86. The distribution also includes user applications, such as the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, OpenOffice.org, Evolution, Rhythmbox, MPlayer, Pidgin, and GIMP.

Yellow Dog Linux is a derivative of Fedora and relies on the RPM package manager. Through successive versions of Yellow Dog Linux, Terra Soft Solutions has invested heavily in implementing support specifically for Apple and IBM hardware. As a result, Yellow Dog Linux supports accelerated graphics and audio hardware out of the box, although some other hardware components will not function properly without modifications to the kernel.

Yeah Thanks Fish Excellent Explanation.

They are a samll company and i dont know enough about linux to recode a complier and kernal so i cant upgrade unless i pay. and man i dont need the support just the distro.

Yeah i almost had to text install which is like pulling teeth for me. but i yeah thats right if i had used the SD connection i was dunked. but i did get a ( my monitor does not have the HDMI in ) but DVI. so i got a HDMI to DVI and it ran fine in Graphical install.

supposedly you can install other distros beside yellow dog but Since you did have to get a special boot loader from either sony or the Yellow dog site and install that via USB before the PS3 would see the install disk I am hessitant to try and run another i am uncertain of and ruining my HD and my system so untill i fork ove the 49 somthing US i am running 1/4 my HD wiht Yellow dog 5 :_)

Pretty much whatever your standard Linux / Debian / Gnu operating system can rum threre is probably a verison of it for the specific yellow dog platform. its not bad and the desktops nice.

So I broke the cable for the 150 gig ps3 mod, ordered the wrong one, and now I have the right one on the way, but have yet to get shipping confirmation.

Anyway....when I do get the cable and have it up and running I'm gonna install YDL on it.
(I have to do another back up, ugh)

That really sucks. Im fine with my 80gig ps3 but with the 150gig mod could you install a program so that you can play ps2 games? Kind of stupid that 40gig ps3s aren't backwards compatible.

With the cell processor, the thing is definitly capable of running ps2 games, only a matter of time before someone figures out how.

take caution with unlicsensed software mods. if they are not supported by sony you are in a greay area with getting help if somthing goes wrong.

I wonder if there is a program that allows backwards compatability once downloaded. It might just be a sony only thing.

The European firmware has an official emulator, can run about half of the ps2 games.

It would have been much more easier to just make all the european, north american and japenese games and such all the same, not different and uncompatible.

Good point. PS3 games aren't region specific, but PS2 games are....
I hate that, seems like it wastes money. Then, if you move, "Sorry, you can't play your game collection over here." SUCKS

I don't even see how sony would make a profit by doing that, its just an inconvienence for people.
