I was bored, so...
I modded my PS3 to 150 gigabytes, with a 3.5 inch hard drive (The PS3 usually uses 2.5). Took all of 10 minutes to get the hard drive and power supply out of an old computer and hook it in.

[edit] Anyone know how to copy files from an external hard drive (Old PS3 drive in external casing) onto the new PS3 hard drive? I plugged it in, but I can't find the drive anywhere in the menus.[/edit]

I still have it, but I have to work on copying over the saved game data from the old hard drive to the new. I think I know how, but it's time to sleep for me. I fix this in the morning.

did you get the saves back up from the previous drive? glad to hear you got the new drive in. You might have to go back wrds to move forwards here though. you just might / maybe able to slave that drive but its format should make invisible to most OS's. you will probably have to go back and install the old HD backup your saves and then re'install the new Drive and then copy your saves.
let us know how its going

It's fine. Anyway...making the back up now, I'll say how it went in 10 or 20 minutes. I didn't have a thumb drive big enough (Damn Warhawk and COD map pack...), so I'm using an external hard drive. It's a very weird set up, a hard drive in the PS3 with the cover open, a hard drive and a power supply sitting in front of it, and an external hard drive sitting next to it.
[edit - 11 minutes later] Ok, it's restoring, seems like it's going fine...[/edit]
[edit - 16 minutes later] Wooooooo!!! It worked! I have a 150 gig ps3, with all my old stuff on it![/edit]
Thanks for the help TB.

Well just glad to hear that it worked and that you are back up and all your save data is in place. That is always a scary moment wondering if all your precious data is safe and being replicated the way it is supposed to. I am sory i could not see your frankenstien rig. It must have been a thing of functional beauty. Congrats on the hardware upgrade. sound like it was pain in the but.

Still is a pain in the butt, I broke the data wire.
WAAAAA!!!!
Ordering a new one, should be here in a few days. For now I'll still have to settle for 40 gig. I shouldn't be making any major progress in any saves, or buying anything, so I shouldn't have to transfer over my files again.

Naa, I have a laptop now, and had a computer (2 actually) of MINE sitting around. The one I robbed it from is a piece of crap, except for the hard drive apparently, and the other comp. uses ATA, not SATA.
It is covered under warranty, and Sony gives you instructions on how to replace the HDD, and I didn't do any internal modding.

I hate microsoft for that. The hard drive they sell is about double price because they have to make their own plug for it (so I can't go out and buy a random HDD and put it in, like I can with the PS3).

yes overall bad idea. they could have made better alliances with other HW manufacturers

Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes, its just because they want more money than they deserve.

well for that i cannot find fault becase within the Law of the US Corporations only leagal responsability is to generate profit for the shareholders above all other concerns.
Ok that is a given. To act in a insane mad manner and to milk your customer base who would be willing to drop more cash for better prodcuts / cross promotional uses.
the whole deal with Bray vs HDDVD was a sham and they got railed on that but that loss should not be passed on to the end user. it should result in a reorganization of the corporation to better enable it to deal with the wants and desires of its installed and potential cusomer base.
rough day. ha sorry for the soap box

So, after what seemed like months, but was only one week, I have my 150 gig ps3 up and running.
There's a new picture of it's more permanent home in the same album.

The new one is the one with rose petals on the PS3. (I had a dying rose I needed to get rid of...)
