Game

Network
Searching the Internet from the XMB™ screen
You can now perform an Internet search directly from the XMB™ screen. > See Details.



Other new or revised features in version 2.40:
Overall
You can now see the system clock on the XMB™ screen. The date and time that were set under [Settings] > [Date and Time] are displayed.
When using a keyboard, you can now clear the entire text entry field at once.
The icon is now displayed when you press the PS button for an operation that cannot be performed.
Users
You can now turn off the PS3™ system from the XMB™ screen using the [Turn Off System] option.
Settings
You can now set the PS3™ system to turn off automatically after updating the system software.
[Reassign Controllers] and [Controller Vibration Function] have been added as options under [Accessory Settings].
Photo
You can now print images from a playlist.
You can now sort items that are grouped in a folder by month or year using the
[Film Date ] or [Film Date ] options.
Music
You can now use a mini-size control panel while playing music.
You can now play music content encoded in MP3 Surround format.*
* MP3 Surround can only be used when playing music content in Linear PCM format.
Video
You can now use the [Frame Noise Reduction] and [Block Noise Reduction] settings for video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media.
You can now play upscaled video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media. When the video content is played, it is upscaled automatically to match the screen size.
Upscaling of Blu-ray Disc (BDAV) video content is now supported.
For DTS playback on DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc media, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 for DVD-Video and DTS-ES Matrix for Blu-ray Discs are now supported.*
* "DTS" is a trademark of DTS Inc.
Game
The procedure for quitting PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been changed.
You can now collect trophies in games that support the trophy feature.
Network
[Search] has been added as an option in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.

Friends
The number of Friends who can be added to a Friends list has been increased from 50 to 100.
The [Information] screen has been redesigned and renamed as [Profile].

Arctidude has a thread on it. if any of you do somthign post your art here so we can drool and root for you. well not right here . porbably better on Arc's thread

We have just gotten word that the illusive and considerably exciting amazing in game xmb tastic firmware 2.40 which is packed full of super duper trophies and goodies enough to make a ps3 fanboy cry.......Sadly is not coming on June 10th. The word on the street is the debug version did have some bugs. Exactly what bugs they are encountering is still unknown.

Rest assured that FW 2.40 is INDEED on its way and all the features we have leaked will be IN the update.

We will keep you updated, if any we receive any further information…

You know the drill - a few days before firmware updates, we give you the lowdown. That hasn’t changed.

What else hasn’t changed: if you don’t see it here, take what you read with a grain of salt.

NOTE: The good thing is that this would have been an opportunity for him to debunk FW 2.40 features, if they weren’t tru.

29 CommentsPS3 Firmware 2.4 - the one we're all waiting for - will be out on June 18, claim "unnamed sources" in Holland.

Version 2.4 is expected to introduce the much-requested in-game communication features to the console, as well as an Achievement-point equivalent Trophy system and other goodies.

"Summer" is the only official word Sony has given on 2.4's arrival, with June heavily tipped. The June 18 report from Dutch site PlayStation Only claims previous rumours of a June 10 release are false.

It's all speculation until Sony gives the official word, which we expect will be any time now.

So, with the news this morning that PS3 Firmware 2.40 will include in-game XMB we've decided to break it down a little - find out what's confirmed and what isn't, and put together what we think 2.40 will actually involve:

What's confirmed:

Technically, nothing. Until Sony issue a press release or post something on their blog, everything is speculation, rumour and wishful thinking. However, there are a number of people we here at TSA can happily place our trust in, and Jim over at Gaming Age is one of them. In addition, everything in this post is our opinion too.

Will the new features automatically appear inside the games?

Whilst claims of universal Friends lists and in-game invites seem realistic enough, don't expect them to suddenly start working when 2.40 arrives. The development kits for the 2.40 features haven't even gone out to developers yet (or so we hear) so any features locked to 2.40 and above will need to be patched in by the devs once they get their hands on the code.

What does this mean?

It means you won't be able to hit the PS button in Motorstorm and invite your mates, not until such functionality is patched into the game and a new title update is made available to download. We would expect that in-game messaging will work across all games though, as part of the XMB layer - just not invites as such.

And custom soundtracks?

Well, Microsoft has a patent on such functionality, it's going to be interesting to see how Sony get around that, if indeed that's the plan. Expect this to be more of a 'music player' that overlays the game, and cancels out the normal game music if the game itself supports it.

So what can we expect?

Well, we're assuming that Sony will increase the Friends list, at least doubling it. We also assume that some kind of XMB functionality will be added to movie playback, the way you're signed out of PSN when watching a Blu-ray is odd. Expect the XMB to show the time, too, in-game, plus we might finally get RSS feeds.

We'll get Trophies, right?

Almost certainly. Again, only for games that support them.

What about Youtube uploading

Well, it's already there in one game - Mainichi Issho (Everyday Together) - but required a game patch, so we can guess that similar options will appear in future games, again, via patches. The option to upload your favourite crashes from GRID would be a nice touch.

And when will 2.40 hit?

June 12th? Seems fair enough, if not the week before...
